Gifting the basic way – Supporting Local Businesses

December 5, 2016
small-businesses-mnThe holiday season is in full swing and I know some of you are having the same issues I am –

Shopping for gifts and buying more for yourself and none for your people (BFs, BFFs, siblings, parents, co-workers, ETC!)

I mean, am I the only one guilty of falling into retail’s black hole of SALES and impulse buying pillows, $60 teas, holiday pajamas, and more?

Well this is my attempt to inspire you (and a wake up call to me) to STOP BUYING SHIT FOR YOURSELF and get some cute things for your friends and family.

I could go on and on about where to buy things, what to buy, who to buy for, but let’s talk about making an impact in the community AND gifting all in one post.

Small businesses in MN are everywhere, you guys. Walk down the streets of the North Loop, Edina, Excelsior, or wherever you’re from, and just pop into a  small shop. Instead of gifting that mug from Target that everyone gives away as a last minute gift, think about gifting some unique pieces from your local shops.

The sad truth is that “a third of new businesses fail within their first two years, and half don’t make it past Year 5.” THEY NEED US JUST AS MUCH AS WE NEED THEIR STUFF.

So here’s some of the best finds I found this holiday for gifting small in Minneapolis – don’t be surprised if I got you something on this list. Do be surprised if I get you anything. JK, kinda.

1.Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist By HERBIVORE BOTANICALS at PARC Boutique

The holidays are all about gifting things you know the other person would never get for themselves but would love to have. Trust me, you don’t know how good this facial spray is until you try it. It’s made of natural ingredients, including coconut water, and will keep your skin baby-soft and smelling divine. Gift this to your GF or mom, and then buy one for yourself.

2. Minny and Paul Gift Sets

This is the perfect gift if you are too indecisive about getting this over that but can’t afford to get them both. YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL… or at least gift it with these chic curated boxes. Save yourself the trip to 5 different locations and select the box that your loved one will adore – all of the product support local MN businesses. So when you can’t pick favorites, just choose a box! My favorite one is the Holiday Tea box and the Savor box for basic foodies.

3. Navigator Note & Passport Wallet – Natural by Leather Works MN

Do you know anyone that experiences a split second of anxiety at the airport looking for their passport, boarding passes, cell phone, all while trying to put on their  shoes at security? If so, this is going to to help them keep their shit together and save you the time you could have used for throwing back a bloody at 6 am or buying a tiny bag of Cheez-Its for $5.  I love this because leather looks classic and timeless. The pockets let you store all of your important travel docs and the optional “Field Notes” let you document anything else you need to while jet-setting. Whether you’re gifting to your friend in a different state or that friend who seems to have an endless cash flow to travel the world, you can’t go wrong with this gift.

4. Indigo Canvas Camera Strap by Leather Works {Sold Exclusively at Wilson and Willy’s}

I don’t know if this is a gift I want more for myself or for my talented photographer friends. It’s perfect for lugging around your DSLR and taking photos around the cities and more. Also, leather again because it’s timeless and the indigo is the perfect modern twist for your guy and girlfriends.

5. Bogart’s Doughnuts (No, this is not a joke)

WHO DOESN’T WANT DELICIOUS DOUGHNUTS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON? This isn’t a joke because these doughnuts are literally perfect in every way. Surprise your co-workers with a box of Brown Butter-Glazed doughnuts to get them through the final hours of work before the much-needed break or bring an assorted box of Maple Butter-Cream filled doughnuts home to your family for your mother to enjoy with her coffee. Seriously, for my semi-selfish people out there, give the gift of doughnuts and hopefully your friends will give the gift of giving you a bite in return. You’ll thank me.

I could go on and on about local businesses – (hey Great Lakes Co, Sota Clothing, Proper & Prim, Thumb Cookies, Askov Finlayson) but I know I only have your patience for like two seconds as you skim through this. Shop more below.

What are you excited to gift this season? Will you be shopping small? Cause I sure as hell am 🙂

This is a great piece. I love the idea of shopping locally, especially when you shop local and on the internet at the same time (for those of us who want to shop locally without leaving our homes!) I’d also like to suggest giving gift donations to local charities (that’s always good!)
